Kalbeliya Costume, Part III, Cutouts Tutorial
Here is a tutorial on how to attach a circular trim with cutouts onto a circular skirt. All of the thumbnails are clickable, and if you click on the bigger picture it will open up the original file, big enough to see the details.
- Use short rectangular pieces of fabric 2cm wider than the desired width for allowances
- Pin the rectangles to each other making sure to leave allowances on both sides
- This is how the right side looks like after you are done
- Stitch the rectangles together
- Trim the excess fabric
- Fold and iron the allowances and pin to the fabric along the outer arch ( the longer one). Do not pin first to the shorter arch, the trim will most probably sag.
- Stitch to the fabric. I wanted to add some silver trim as well, so I just stitched them together.
- Trace your pattern on the trim, mine is just a simple diamond shape. Pinch the fabric in the middle of the diamond and make a small cutout.
- Don’t be tempted to make the cutout bigger yet, it will cause the fabric to sag and skew
- Stitch along the other arch
- Now is the time to trim the excess fabric and make the cutouts larger. I also made four cuts towards the diamonds’ vertices to fold the allowances in. Lastly iron it out.
- Stitch the cutouts to the fabric
- Ta-da!!!
- Cutouts are ready!

your skirt is looking amazing! you have so much patience to sew this. using a circle skirt pattern as a base is a good idea. Doesn’t look like it will be as bulky as the indian gypsy dancers skirts.
What kind of top are you going to wear with the skirt?
would love to see a photo of the finished outfit.
Thanks, Sharna!
This project is on hold now, but I am going to resume working on it in January, and I will definitely put out pictures of the process.
